Robert Maurer is the proud owner of a fantastic midcentury home in Sacramento, CA.

Reading the interview, you will understand how he’s not just any homeowner—he’s got a rare mix of deep knowledge in interior design, architecture, and the nitty-gritty of renovating these classic homes.

Because of this, as we prepared for the interview, I knew we had to dive into not only why he’s so passionate about mid-century design but also what it’s really like to bring a house like his back to life. Enjoy our chat.

MCH: Hi Robert, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

Sure, I am Robert Maurer, a graphic and interior designer originally from Canal Fulton, Ohio. I studied graphic design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where I began my career designing for exhibits and convention spaces.

My passion for design brought me to Sacramento, CA where I continued my career as a graphic designer. I am now the co-founder and Creative Director of Commuter Industries, and creator of the home renovation and MCM lifestyle blog: Midcenturymaurer.com

MCH: How did you come to live in your current house?

Robert Maurer: I've been an enthusiast of mid-century design for most of my life. Even growing up, I was drawn to vintage toys, cars, cookbooks, and furniture from that period.
