A while back, we had the opportunity to speak with Architect Gary Leivers, a Principal at DGA Architects, about his 1958 home on San Diego’s 6th Avenue, near Balboa Park. The building, a 31-unit mid-century design by Henry Hester, is known for its clean lines and connection to outdoor spaces, making it a local landmark.
Gary secured his place in 2018 after a 13-year wait and shared his story of living in and restoring this unique home with us.

Gary first discovered the building during its restoration in 2005. “I tried to buy a unit then, but it didn’t work out,” he explains. Thirteen years later, the same unit came on the market. “I didn’t hesitate—I bought it within an hour.”
For him, the appeal was both personal and professional. “I’ve always been drawn to mid-century design for its minimalism and practicality. It’s not just a style; it’s a way of thinking.”
